Cancellation mechanism: self serve online
Automatic renewal: see terms belowRenews automatically until cancelled. "If you purchase a Subscription, we (or our third-party payment processor) will automatically charge you each month on the day on which you created your Subscription (the 'Billing Cycle'), using the Payment Information which you provided, until you cancel your Subscription... your Subscription will incur recurring monthly charges" (ToU Section 9(b)). Therapy subscription fee "is billed monthly on the same day each month" (refund/cancel FAQ). Members paying via insurance are billed differently — "may not be charged monthly by Brightside, and instead may be responsible for their insurance copays and deductibles in accordance with payment schedules set forth by their insurance carrier" (ToU Section 9(b)).
Cancellation terms as published: Self-serve in-portal cancellation is the documented member flow, per FAQ: "If you'd like to cancel your Medication subscription, login to your Brightside Portal and select 'Settings' from the menu bar. From there you will want to select 'Manage Plan' and then 'Cancel My Medication Plan'" — and the identical flow for Therapy ("Cancel My Therapy Plan"). Terms of Use Section 9(c) additionally allows email cancellation: "To cancel Services, you can send an email to support@brightside.com or use the cancellation process in your account settings." Cancellation "will be effective at the end of the then current Subscription period" — access continues through the paid period, then terminates without further charges (ToU Section 9). Separately, a platform-wide "no-show" penalty applies for missed/late-cancelled appointments: "Members using insurance may be charged up to $200.00 for each missed appointment, based on appointment type... Proper notice of cancellation requires that you cancel or reschedule your appointment...at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to the appointment's start time" (ToU Section 9(d)); this no-show fee "is not reimbursable by your insurance carrier" and is charged directly to the payment method on file. Members enrolled through the monthly self-pay subscription instead "forfeit their ability to reschedule the appointment" on a late cancel/no-show, without an extra dollar fee. Members must also meet minimum engagement requirements (initial visit within 30 days of enrollment; ongoing psychiatry visits at least every 180 days; therapy visits at least every 60 days) or Brightside "reserve[s] the right to pause your services" (messaging/check-ins) until an overdue appointment is scheduled (ToU Section 11).
Refund policy as published: Pre-first-visit refund window: "You may cancel a Transaction for a full refund at least twenty-four (24) hours before your first scheduled consultation with a Healthcare Provider. AFTER THAT POINT, YOUR PURCHASE IS FINAL AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CANCEL THE PURCHASE OR RECEIVE A REFUND OF YOUR SUBSCRIPTION FEE" (ToU Section 9(c)). The consumer-facing refund FAQ frames this slightly differently: "we do not issue refunds after the time of your initial scheduled consultation with your psychiatric provider has passed, as Brightside providers take time to review your information and begin preparing a treatment plan prior to your initial scheduled video consultation." After that point: "All therapy subscription payments are non-refundable... EXCEPT AS SET FORTH ABOVE WITH RESPECT TO YOUR INITIAL SUBSCRIPTION PURCHASE, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A REFUND OF ANY PORTION OF THE SUBSCRIPTION FEE PAID FOR AT THE TIME OF CANCELLATION" (ToU Section 9(c)). Extra (add-on) video therapy sessions that are purchased and then canceled can be refunded on request via Member Services (refund FAQ). No-show/late cancellation fees (up to $200 for insured members) are explicitly excluded from refund/insurance reimbursement.
Trial terms as published: No named "free trial" of a paid plan exists. The closest equivalents are (a) the "Free Assessment" entry funnel — an intake questionnaire used to recommend a plan, not a trial of paid service — and (b) the 24-hour full-refund cancellation window before the first scheduled consultation described under refund_policy above, which functions as an implicit cooling-off period after purchase but before any care is delivered.
